Since 9/11, national security officials have insisted on new powers to fight terrorism at home, where mass surveillance by the NSA has recently come to light, and abroad, where drones have enabled an unprecedented campaign of targeted killing. How compatible are these policies and the secrecy that often surrounds them with self-government?
Conor Friedersdorf is an American journalist – a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he focuses on politics and national affairs, a columnist at the Orange County Register, where he writes on civil liberties, and the founding editor of The Best of Journalism, a newsletter devoted to exceptional nonfiction. He lives in Venice, California.
